Lecture: Ancient Ephesus and Modern Mixed Pilgrimage: An Exploration of Turkish Rituals in Context, by Logan Sparks (University of Tilburg), May 17, 2011, 18.00.
Abstract
In
this lecture, Logan Sparks will share the fruit of his research on
ritual hybridty and mixed pilgrimage in modern Turkey and the Islamic
world, over the past three years. In order to enter into this
area of research on ritual that is increasingly of scholarly interest,
we will examine both the particular case of ritual ambiguity in Ephesus
and the various sanctuaries of Turkey. These natural sites, churches
and shrines shared and revered by Greeks, Turks, Armenians and others,
continue to present us with a challenge in our understanding of
identity and the place of ritual in the historical and modern
Mediterranean and Near East. In this talk we will look at the most
interesting examples and consider the ways in which long-standing
communal relationships, popular beliefs and traditional etiquette play
a role in the development of these very unique places.

konferansta Logan Sparks Modern Türkiye ve İslam dünyasındaki ritüel
hibridite ve karışık ziyaretgahlar üzerine üç yıldır sürdürdüğü
araştırmasının sonuçlarını paylaşacaktır. Giderek artan bir akademik
ilgi gören ritüel araştırmaları alanına giriş yapabilmek adına
Ephesusdaki törensel belirsizlik örneği ve Türkiyedeki çeşitli kutsal
alanlar incelenecektir. Yunanlılar, Türkler, Ermeniler ve diğerleri
tarafından paylaşılan ve saygı duyulan bu doğal alanlar, kiliseler ve
mabetler, tarihi ve modern Akdeniz ve Yakındoğudaki ritüellerin
kimliğini ve rolünü anlamamız yolunda tartışma yaratmaya devam
etmektedir. Sparks bu sunumunda konu ile ilgili en ilginç örneklere
bakarak bu eşsiz alanların gelişiminde uzun süreli toplumsal
ilişkilerin, popüler inanışların ve geleneksel kuralların nasıl bir rol
oynadığını inceleyecektir.
