Lecture:
"Pera Exists No More!" The Great Fire of Istanbul's Diplomatic Quarter,
August 2, 1831, Steven Richmond (ITU), February 18, 2011, 18.00 Abstract One
of the great 'curses' of Istanbul for centuries was its tendency to
burn. Pera, the diplomatic quater of the city, was devastated by a
massive fire on August 2, 1831. Destroyed in the conflagration were
around 80,000 houses plus all of the foreign embassy buildings of Pera,
with the exception of two. Drawing on diplomatic reports, eye-witness
accounts, and newspaper reportage, the lecture offers a vivid picture
of the catastrophe and provides analysis of the fire's causes and
effects."

Technical University.
