Jan Schmidt
(Leiden University): Fritz Rudolf Kraus in Istanbul (1937-1949) and the development of Ancient Near Eastern Studies in Turkey

 Schmidtposter

The German Assyriologist Rudolf Fritz Kraus (1910-1991) spent the years between 1937 and 1949 in Istanbul, holding positions at the Archaeological Museums and Istanbul University. He became professor at Leiden University in 1954 and his personal archive is now part of the collections of the University Library there. Some hundreds of letters which he wrote and received while in Istanbul paint a vivid picture of life in the city, the development of Near Eastern Studies in Turkey and much more. The letters are currently being prepared for publication by Jan Schmidt (Leiden) and Ludmila Hanisch (Berlin).
