Symposium: Cultural Interaction: Local Communities between North Mesopotamia and Anatolia in the Sixth Millennium BC, organized by the Netherlands Institute in Turkey and Koç University, Department of Archaeology and History of Art, June 6, 2011, 10.00 18.00

During
the sixth millennium BC, the zone from the Orontes/Amuq Valley in the
West to the Upper Tigris region in the East can be characterized as a
cultural interaction zone, connecting the Halaf world of Upper
Mesopotamia and the Chalcolithic societies of Anatolia. Recent
excavations and surveys in modern day Turkey have brought to light
local communities that were actively involved in the transfer of
materials, styles and ideas throughout and beyond this interaction
zone.
This workshop will look at exchange networks and
cultural interaction, while at the same time considering how these were
firmly rooted in local social and economic practices. The underlying
idea is that in order to understand exchange as it took place between
geographically distinct groups we need to study its mechanisms,
significance and effects within local communities.
Focusing on
a small number of key sites, the presenters will look at what insights
can be obtained from methods such as intra-site spatial analyses,
stylistic comparisons and chemical sourcing analyses. The workshop
hopes to offer a platform to share results of ongoing research, to
exchange ideas and stimulate debate.
