Migration and Ethnicity: the Case of Emirdağ, March 29, 18:30

Lecture by Jak den Exter (Leiden University)

The police-officer asking: ‘What’s bigger: Turkey or Emirdağ?’ is a running gag in quite a few places in places like Brussels and Gent in Belgium, Haarlem in the Netherlands and St. Etienne in France. Why do we find such big concentrations of people from Emirdağ in these and other places? Is there any relation with their Turcoman background? And why do the different villages, groups and clans show quite different behaviour in the migration process?

Jak den Exter will present a lecture on the research that he has conducted from the late seventies onwards to find answers to these and other questions related to migration and ethnicity.

From 2006 to 2014, Jak den Exter was director of NIHA (Netherlands Institute for Higher Education Ankara)

This lecture by Jak den Exter will be in English, with powerpoints and discussion in English and/or Turkish.
