Lecture February 10, 2010 (18:00), at IFEA - Institut Français d'Etudes Anatoliennes Nicole van Os (Leiden University): Doing research on Ottoman women and the International Women's Movement or, how to turn into an armchair scholar Abstract In
1923, Arthur Field, the secretary of the Anglo-Turkish Society wrote an
article in the Jus Suffragi, the periodical of the International
Woman's Suffrage Alliance on Turkish women and the newly founded Turk
Kadinlar Birligi. This article is generally seen as the first overture
of the international women's movement towards Turkish women. However,
sources which are for a large part available through internet reveal
that such an overture took place much earlier. In this talk I will in
the first place tell more about the first contacts of Ottoman, Turkish
women with the international women's movement and secondly discuss the
use of internet sources for the study of the Ottoman, Turkish women's history. |
