Lecture June 11, 2009 (18:30) Petra de Bruijn (Leiden University): Experimentalism in Turkish literature: Adalet Ağaoğlu's Yaz Sonu Dr. P. de Bruijn is University Lecturer (Assistant Professor) of Turkish. Her research interests focus on Turkish literature with an emphasis on modern literature; theatre, film and television drama. Modern Turkish literature interlaces Western genres and writing styles with indigenous traditions and subjects. Petra de Bruijn studies the transitions of these modernity’s with a reflection on the theoretical aspects. Novel, theatre, film and television drama can all be considered narrative media. Petra de Bruijn studies the interactions between traditional and ‘new’ narrations. Profile: http://www.hum.leiden.edu/lias/staff/bruijnpde.html When Modern Turkish literature adapted the western genre of the novel the prominent writing style was realism. The realistic writing style remained prominent until the 1980. A small contingent Turkish authors differentiated from this main stream. Under the impression of Western modernist and avant-garde literature they started to use experimental techniques in their novels and short stories. Problematic is the categorization genre features of these texts. Should we call them modernist, postmodernist or something else? By means of a case study on Adalet Ağaoğlu’s Yazsonu (Summersend) the possibilities and impossibilities of this project will be demonstrated. Yazsonu was first published in 1980, at a moment Adalet Ağaoğlu, hadn’t heard of postmodernism at all. Nevertheless some features of Yazsonu, point clearly towards a postmodern approach. Adalet Ağaoğlu’s Yazsonu will serve as an example to demonstrate the necessity to come to descriptions of experimentalism in Turkish literature and the necessity to revise theory on Western modernisms in general. *** Yrd. Roman, tiyatro, film ve televizyon dramaları birer anlatı ortamları olarak düşünülebilir. De Bruijn geleneksel ve ‘yeni’ anlatılar arasındaki etkileşim üzerinde çalışmaktadır. Gerçekçi anlatı üslubu 1980’lere kadar önde gelmeye devam etmişse de, küçük bir grup Türk yazarı bu genel akımdan ayrışmıştır. Bu yazarlar, batı çağdaş ve yenilikçi edebiyatının etkisiyle roman ve kısa öykülerinde deneysel teknikler kullanmaya başlamışlardır. Burada sorun, söz konusu metinlerin özelliklerinin sınıflandırılmasıdır. Onları modernist, postmodernist ya da bambaşka bir şekilde mi adlandırmalıyız? Adalet Ağaoğlu’nun Yazsonu adlı romanının bir incelemesi yoluyla bu projenin imkan ve imkansızlıkları ortaya koyulacaktır. Yazsonu ilk kez 1980 yılında, Adalet Ağaoğlu’nun postmodernizm hakkında henüz bir şeyler duymadığı bir zamanda yayınlanmıştır. Buna rağmen, Yazsonu’nun bazı özellikleri açıkça postmodern bir yaklaşımı işaret etmektedir. Bu roman, Türk edebiyatında deneyselliğin tanımının yapılmasının ve genel olarak batı modernizmi hakkındaki teorinin yeniden gözden geçirilmesinin gerekliliğini sergileyebilmek için bir örnek olarak ele alınacaktır.
