Professor Pim den Boer (History of European Culture, University of
Amsterdam) Homer in Modern Europe
Günay Uslu (History of European Culture, University of Amsterdam)
Homer in Modern Turkey

Since the nineteenth century
Homer is considered quintessential in the formation of Europes
cultural identity. The instrumental use of Troy, the Iliad
and the Odyssey for identity claims is striking. However,
Homeric heritage inspired not only European cultural traditions, but
the Turkish imagination as well.
In two lectures, Den Boer and Uslu discuss the cultural heritage of
Homer in western Europe and in Turkey.
