Research Projects
The Netherlands Institute in Turkey currently participates in several research projects. These include:
Eastern Marmara Early Farming Project
This research project, which was begun in 1986, focuses on the early agricultural history of the Eastern Marmara region of northwestern Anatolia. It is a collaborative project of NINO and NIT. At present, excavations are carried out at Barçın Höyük near Yenişehir. Earlier phases of the project investigated early farming communities at Ilıpınar and Menteşe. Reports on these excavations have been published in the series PIHANS (see
publications).
Architectural Heritage of the Ottoman Balkans
This long-term research project carried out by NIT research fellow Machiel Kiel, includes not only a full inventory of Ottoman architectural remains in southeastern Europe, but also archival research into the social and political aspects of the building programmes.
Publication of Tell Kurdu Excavations
Several seasons of excavations at the Neolithic and Chalcolithic site of Tell Kurdu in the Hatay province in southern Turkey were carried out by the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago between 1996 and 2001. The co-directors of the 2001 season, Fokke Gerritsen (NIT) and Rana Özbal (Boğaziçi University, Istanbul) are preparing a final report. The Tell Kurdu
website has more information on the project (last updated in 2004).
Ottoman Period Iron Production at Demirköy
A large, interdisciplinary research project is currently underway near Demirköy in Kırklareli in Thrace, investigating the remains of furnaces, forgeries, workshops and living quarters of the iron production of the Ottoman period. The project takes place under the auspices of the Turkish Society for the History of Science, and includes among the partners the Kırklareli Museum, Boğaziçi University, Istanbul Technical University, Bochum Mining Museum and Çanakkale University. NIT supports the project with the coordination and documentation of the fieldwork
related to the industrial sections of the excavations.
