The Netherlands Institute in Turkey, the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Istanbul and the University of Amsterdam organize two public keynote lectures on: ‘Nationalism in Turkey and other parts of Europe, 1800-1950’.

The lectures will be read by professor Joep Leerssen (University of Amsterdam) and Dr Uğur Üngör (Utrecht University) on 25 May 2016 at 18.00 in the historical Dutch Chapel of the Consulate General, İstiklal Caddesi 197, to the occasion of the conference on 'Nation-building and Nationalism in Turkey and Europe'.

Joep Leerssen

Academy Professor of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Chair of Modern European Literature at the Department of European Studies, University of Amsterdam and Spinoza Prize Laureate (2008).

Joep Leerssen will talk on ‘Identity as epidemic: on the transnational diffusion of nationalism’.

Uğur Üngör

Associate professor at the Department of History, Utrecht University, researcher at the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies and Heineken Young Scientist Award Laureate (2012).

Uğur Üngör will talk on: ‘Nationalisms in the (Post-)Ottoman Twilight: Culture, Geography, Contestation’.
