About the NIT library

The Institute has a specialized library of about 15,000 books and 9,000 journal volumes. The main subject areas of the library are:

  • Archaeology and Architectural History of Anatolia, the Near East and the Balkans. Subject categories include excavation reports, architecture, art, material science studies, environmental and geoarchaeology. All periods and to the end of the Ottoman Period are represented, with an emphasis on prehistory.
  • History and Languages of Anatolia and the Ancient Near East
  • History and Cultural Heritage of Istanbul
  • Art History of the Low Countries

NIT Library Updated Rules

Libraries are open only for users who have submitted the NIT and ANAMED Libraries Joint Membership Form and received membership approval. If you do not qualify for the membership but would benefit from access to the library email us at aysel.arslan@nit-istanbul.org

The library is open to users only by appointment. Users who have renewed and confirmed their membership could forward their appointment requests to the library managers by submitting the NIT and ANAMED Library Usage Appointment Form. The users whose appointment request is approved will be informed by an e-mail from the library. Users who do not have a confirmation e-mail will not be accepted to the premises. Appointment requests are confirmed within one or two days at the latest, depending on the seating capacity available.

Members are obliged to submit their membership cards to the building’s information desk every time they enter the Library through the control of Merkez Han’s security procedures. The membership card is for personal use. It is forbidden to be used by someone else. In this case, the membership will be canceled. Members cannot bring occasional guests to the Library.

Library staff will receive only one person at a given time at the Reference desk so as to maintain social distancing. An air cleaning machine has been commissioned for air circulation in the NIT Library.

Opening hours

The NIT library is a non-lending library open from Monday to Friday, 09.00-18.00 hrs.
