The Feriköy Protestant Cemetery Initiative

The Feriköy Protestant Cemetery Initiative aims to preserve, document, and study Istanbul's main Protestant cemetery as an important local historic landmark.

Introduction

The Feriköy Protestant Cemetery Initiative aims to preserve, document, and study Istanbul's main Protestant cemetery as an important local historic landmark. The Initiative currently unites scholars affiliated with five Istanbul-based research centers (Netherlands Institute in Turkey, NIT; Orient-Institute Istanbul, OII; American Research Institute in Turkey, ARIT; Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul, SRII; Hungarian Cultural Center) who share the common goal of conserving, recording, and researching the site, and it seeks to include other institutions and individuals interested in the cemetery both as an active burial ground and as a landmark.

Mapping the cemetery

The Netherlands Institute in Turkey contributes to the efforts to document the cemetery by creating an updated digital map, plotting all the extant graves, and creating a GIS environment to collect and link current and historical information on the graves and the individuals buried in them. The mapping project uses drone images made by István Pi Tóth at the initiative of the Hungarian Cultural Center in Istanbul.
